Fushigi Yuugi is about a junior high school student Miaka and her friend Yui who are transported into a book named The Universe of the Four Gods. Inside the novel they discover that they are the Priestesses of Suzaku and Seiryuu. Both of them are to gather the seven Celestial Warriors in order to summon their Gods and obtain three wishes. The two girls fall in love with one of the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku named Tamahome, who happens to have special feelings for Miaka.
